Payback with a heat pump: pays off within 5 years
With a heat pump, the ventilation system gains a strong economic dimension. Within 5 to 7 years, the investment into the heat pump typically pays back, and the system then starts generating heat “almost for free.”
Performance & consumption:
- Airflow: 10 000 m³/h
- Air cooling by HP: approx. 7–8 °C
- Heat pump output: up to 40 kW (depends on humidity and coil condensation)
- COP (coefficient of performance): ~4 (inlet 7/2 °C; outlet 45/50 °C)
- Average heat gain: 28 kW for 7 kWe HP input
Economic calculation:
- Electricity price: 0,2 €/kWh
- Resulting heat price: 0,1 €/kWh
- Net benefit: 0,9 € per operating hour
- Daily operation: 14 hours
- Annual operation: 340 days
- Annual benefit: approx. 4.100 €
Investment: Adding a heat pump (HP) to the system costs approximately € 20.500 – 28.800, increasing the total project cost by about the same amount; however, with an annual saving of around € 4.100 on heat recovery, the payback period is roughly 5–7 years.
